Muay Thai Gear

If you are a Muay Thai practitioner, your gear is an important part of your journey! You want to own:
– Boxing Gloves 14oz
– Full Shin Guards (class level 1.5 and up)
– Mouthguard (class level 2 and up)
– Boxing Mitts (extra credit)

IMPORTANT: We have NOT tried a lot of the gear we are about to suggest, our recommendations are based on price points and what others have owned and liked. Any gear we have personally experienced is denoted with ** after the price. Also, this is just a STARTING POINT. Feel free to explore far beyond what we list below.

BOXING GLOVES (14oz)

Boxing glove ounces do not determine how they will fit in your hands, the BRAND and quality determine the fit. Here are some recs to get you started:

SHIN GUARDS (Full Coverage)

TRY THEM ON! If you order online, make sure they are returnable.
– Velcro & Foot elastic: Should feel fitted/snug around calves & ankles
– Foot cover: Should cover as much of your toes as possible but NOT touch the ground. Touching the ground over your toes is bad.

MOUTHGUARD

There are TONS of mouthguards out there. You will have to follow directions to fit your mouthguard to your mouth. Some recs:

(This is pricey, but it is our favorite. We use the 10-13yrs size, which actually fits our mouths and does not gag us. It is thin, you can talk with it in your mouth, and it doesn’t make you feel like a chimpanzee.)

KNIT INNER GLOVES

We use knit inner gloves in lieu of hand wraps. It’s good to own a few of these, and you can buy them from us for $4 a pair (Purchase on our Fitli and pick up when you come to class, OR buy them in-person with CASH). If you are buying them on your own, make sure they have grip dots on them.

Care of Boxing Gloves

Step 1: Loop boxing gloves velcro backwards so it opens the gloves.

Step 2: Spray your choice of anti-bacterial cleaner, wipe with towel

Step 3: Place in front of a fan for 30m

Step 4: Store OUT of sunlight in a dry, air-y place.

WARNING: Once your gear gets stinky, it is almost impossible to make it NOT stinky. Prevent the stink.

Care of Shin Guards, and MItts

Step 1: Spray with your choice of anti-bacterial cleaner, wipe down with towel

Step 2: Place in front of a fan until dry

Step 3: Store OUT of sunlight in a dry, air-y place.

Care of MouthGuard & Knit Gloves

Mouthguard: Clean with soft toothbrush using water and a little toothpaste (or mouthguard cleaning solution). Let dry completely before returning to case. Clean your mouthguard EVERY TIME YOU USE IT.

KNIT INNER GLOVES: Hand or machine wash, hang to dry (though some students say they toss them in the dryer).
